ASLA files suit over SITES trademarks

The American Society of Landscape Architects, a partner in the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) along with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin and the U.S. Botanic Garden, has filed a legal challenge to a claim of sole ownership of the SITES trademarks. A dispute over the trademarks developed earlier this year when the University of Texas filed applications for registration in the name of the University's Board of Regents, effectively claiming exclusive domain. Despite negotiations, the University has declined to withdraw its trademark filings-thus the challenge by ASLA.
