Sarah Reichard, renowned conservation and invasive plants specialist, University of Washington professor and director of the University of Washington Botanic Gardens, passed away Monday, August 29, while leading a garden tour in South Africa.

According to her University of Washington biography, “she studied biological invasions, including the traits of successful invaders, and ways to predict a plant’s invasive ability. She worked on the early detection and rapid assessment of new invaders, as well as the effects of plant invaders on native ecosystems.”

She has written The Conscientious Gardener: Cultivating a Garden Ethic, about how routine gardening functions can affect today’s ecosystem.
