GROWS Speaker Line Up Announced
New England GROWS has announced its speaker lineup for the conference, held November 30 to December 2 at the
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Speakers include Tracy DiSabato-Aust, landscape designer, horticulturist and author; Roger Cook, landscape contractor for the television series This Old House; Suzi McCoy and Katie McCoy Dubow of the Garden Media Group and Michael Raupp, Ph.D., entomologist.
Double Dynamite Crapemyrtle
Double Dynamite Lagerstroemia indica PPAF is the third release of the Play It Again crapemyrtle series. This crapemyrtle features cherry-red flowers in full sun and uninterrupted blooming for 100 plus days. It has a much-branched growth habit and wine colored new growth that darkens with age. It has an estimated height is 8 to 10 feet and is disease resistant.
Farwest Show Displays Growth and New Varieties Showcase Winners
The Farwest Show continues to grow. More than 6,300 industry professionals turned out for the expo, a 6 percent increase over 2015. The show also saw 53 new exhibitors, the most since 2002. The total number of exhibitors was over 400, representing a 4 percent increase over 2015. BabyCakes Blackberry wins top judges’ honors at the New Varieties Showcase. BabyCakes Blackberry (Rubus x ‘APF-236T’) was selected as Best in Show honors and Lavalamp Sublime Hydrangea (Hydreangea paniculata ‘Kolmakilma’ PPAF, CBRAF) was selected for the People’s Choice Awards. BabyCakes Blackberry is a dwarf thornless blackberry bush bred by the University of Arkansas and jointly selected by Fall Creek Farm & Nursery Inc. and the University of Arkansas. It was introduced by Fall Creek and is available from Farwest exhibitors Alpha Nursery, Bailey Nurseries Inc., Fisher Farms LLC and Monrovia. Lavalamp Sublime Hydrangea was hybridized by Kolster BV in The Netherlands, and is available from Farwest Show exhibitor Van Belle Nursery Inc.
Aris Appoints Managing Director
Aris Horticulture has announced that Blair Hoey is joining the company as managing director for its Green Leaf Plants division. Hoey has a background in horticulture and perennial production with over 20 years of experience in all aspects of supply chain management. Hoey is a graduate of Oklahoma State University with a degree in Agricultural and Horticultural Science.
AFE Welcomes New Trustees, Chairman
The American Floral Endowment (AFE) has appointed three new trustees and a new chairman. Dwight Larimer will be the new chairman and will assume leadership at the AFE Fundraising Dinner, replacing outgoing chairman Gabriel Becerra. The new trustees are David Boulton of Flowers by George in Arlington, Washington; Patrick Dahlson of Mayesh Wholesale Florist in Los Angeles, California and Michael A. Mellano, Ph.D. of Mellano & Company in San Luis Rey, California.
AmericanHort Interior Plantscape Hall of Fame Nominations Open
Nominations are being accepted for the 2017 AmericanHort Interior Plantscape Hall of Fame Award. The award honors individuals of integrity whose personal dedication provide leadership in the development and growth of the interiorscape industry. Individuals nominated must have contributed for a minimum of 15 years to the development and permanent betterment of the interiorscape industry. Nominations will be accepted in the categories of Plantscaping Professional, Allied Professional, and Posthumous Inductee. The deadline to nominate is October 1, 2016.
